The largest tendon in your body is the Achilles. This tendon connects muscles in your back all the way down to your heel. This tendon must withstand a lot of pressure. The two main types of Achilles injuries are 1) Achilles tendonitis and 2) a tear of the tendon.
Achilles tendonitis frequently occurs when your training intensity increases significantly, or you begin training on a new surface. With Achilles tendonitis, you might feel mild pain that gradually increases during your workout. You will also deal with minor swelling, tenderness, and stiffness. In some severe cases, intense pain might be felt for several hours after exercising. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please contact your physician to avoid significant injury.
Your Achilles tendon can tear if it is overstretched, twisted, or overused. When a tear occurs, you will hear a popping sound, which will quickly be followed by pain and swelling in the heel. Additional signs of a tear might include an inability to walk correctly or inability to bend the foot downward.
If there is a complete tear, your physician will recommend surgery. After the surgery is completed, your foot will be stabilized with a cast. If you choose non-surgical option are selected, your leg will be placed in a cast to allow your tendons to heal naturally. The recovery time is longer if non-surgical options are selected, and only surgical repair can offer full recovery.
